Patriots offensive tackle Trent Brown has never been shy about sharing his thoughts on, and love for, the New England Patriots. That said, fans of the team, and Brown, should be thrilled to hear what he had to say this week.

Appearing on “The Pat McAfee Show,” an unfiltered honest sports talk show if ever there was one, Brown discussed a wide range of football-related topics with McAfee and his crew. Brown appeared earlier this postseason on the popular “Pardon My Take” podcast and shared similar love for his coach and team. But now it seems Brown appears to be taking on a bit more of a leadership role with the team, speaking freely on a number of personal and team-related matters.

Brown said the team “had a great offseason together” and that he’s excited about this upcoming season. The 2022 season will mark his eighth in the league, and Brown said he hopes that Foxborough “will be my final home” as far as his playing career goes.

A big man with big opinions, Brown did discuss that he has weight clauses and incentives in his contract, adding “I’ve gotta get this money.” But he knows staying below weight -- he says he weighs 370 lbs now -- and staying healthy is just as important for himself as it is for the team: “You can’t lead if you’re not doing everything that you can do to be in on the field week in and week out.”

On his quarterback, Mac Jones, Brown said, “Mac is always the first one in the building and the last one out”, also adding that Jones “can shoot the shit from time to time but he handles his business day in and day out”.

Brown, like McAfee, had positive things to say about Matt Patricia, adding that the former defensive coordinator turned special offensive assistant can add “perspective from the who what where when and why department.” And when talking about perhaps his favorite topic, coach Bill Belichick, Brown said the coach is “cool as s**t” and watches game film on the treadmill, which he’s on sometimes, “for about two hours a day.”

With many veteran voices on both sides of the ball moving on, and major changes being made in personnel, scheme and coaching, it’s refreshing to see Brown mature and embrace being a leader on a team that is significantly better with him on the field (almost two yards per carry better). Whether Brown starts at left or right tackle -- he practiced both spots this spring and has played both positions in New England -- will be another storyline to keep an eye on during camp this summer.
