George Russell will drive an Mercedes F1 machine at FoS this year, along with many other driver/car combinations

The Duke of Richmond’s front lawn is freshly mowed, there’s hardly a straw bale strand out of place and the smell of high-octane petrol is in the air – the Goodwood Festival of Speed is back, and this year it’s promising to be better than ever.

Goodwood has always been a magnet for all that is good, great and even better about motor sport – iconic cars, legendary drivers and a whole host of celebrities in an event which exudes glamour but also satisfies the need for speed of any diehard racing fan.

From championship winning cars to exotic road models, almost every four-wheeled machine imaginable (and many two-wheeled too) will be on show this weekend – read our guide below on what’s on, when it’s happening and how to watch it.

Mansell will get behind the wheel of his title-winning Williams once more

Without a doubt, the headline act of the 2022 Festival of Speed will be Nigel Mansell, commemorating the 30th anniversary of his Formula 1 world championship.

‘Our Nige’ will be driving several of his iconic F1 cars up the hill, including the Williams FW14B, Ferrari 640 and the Lotus 91.

The former will of course be taking centre stage at the Hillclimb, a car which Mansell drove to nine race wins in 1992, claiming the drivers’ title with five races in hand.

Over a career which spanned 15 seasons, Mansell took 31 race wins, 32 pole positions and 59 podiums – the FoS will therefore be a real opportunity to recognise one of Britain’s most celebrated racing heroes.

Jackie Stewart will be appearing behind the wheel this year

The driver entry list at FoS is know to read like a ‘who’s who’ of racing legends, and this year is no exception.

Three-time F1 champion Jackie Stewart driving up the hill, as well as two-time title-winner Mika Häkkinen, plus British legends Jenson Button and Damon Hill.

Other F1 icons racing driving that famous hillclimb include Mark Webber, Rene Arnoux, Ricardo Patrese and many others.

Dario Franchitti will be flying the flag for American racing as well as that of GB by driving a 1986 March IndyCar, whilst the endurance discipline will be well represented by Le Mans and F1 legend Jacky Ickx, nine-time La Sarthe Winner Tom Kristensen, Derek Bell, Richard Attwood and Henri Pescarolo.

In two-wheel terms, TT icon John McGuinness will be taking to his bike, along with Wayne Rainey who will be riding his championship-winning Yamaha YZR500 for the first time in almost 30 years, as well as Kevin Schwantz, Mick Doohan and Kenny Roberts.

The Jordan 191 in which Michael Schumacher made his debut will appear this weekend

From George Russell piloting the modern day Mercedes W12 F1 championship-winning F1 car to a plethora of historic machinery, there’s no better place than the FoS to see the world’s best competition cars all in one location.

Included in the F1 cars running will be the McLaren MP4/5, MP4/25 the Renault RS10 and the machine in which Michael Schumacher made his debut – the Jordan 191, while pre-war machinery like the Auto Union Type-C, Delage DH V12 and Bentley Blower continuation model will also take on the hill.

Five current F1 teams have been confirmed to run recent grand prix cars – joining the Silver Arrows will be Ferrari, Williams, McLaren and another yet to be announced.

Along with the Mansell landmark, there are a number of other anniversaries to celebrate – including Ferrari’s 75th year as a racing organisation. In recognition, a huge number of Ferrari competition cars will run at Goodwood, including the 312B F1 car, the 512 sports car racer, the 156 Sharknose as well more modern offerings such as the F2008 which Felipe Massa so nearly won the world championship in.

Porsche will be showing off its new LMDh Le Mans Hypercar, Glickenhaus will be demonstrating its 007 model, and there will be 15 vintage endurance cars from various manufacturers running as part of a celebration on 40 years of Group C.

Amongst these fearsome machines will be a Porsche 956 driven by Derek Bell, Mercedes Sauber C9 piloted by Alex Brundle and several Jaguar Group C cars too.

It is also of course be 40 years since the Group B rally category first debuted – therefore we’ll see Stig Blomqvist driving a 1985 Audi Quattro, which will be appearing next to a Peugeot 205, MG Metro 8R4 and many more.

There will also be classic BMWs present to celebrate the Munich marque’s 50th anniversary, as well as modern electric competition cars, such as the new Gen3 Formula E car, driven by Nick Heidfeld, the Odyssey 21 Extreme E car, the Hydrogen-powered LMPH2G endurance prototype and the electric Nitro Rallycross series’ 1000bhp FCX-1 demonstrated by Jenson Button.

As well as being a celebration of motor racing history, the Festival is also an industry event, where the world’s biggest and/or most exclusive manufacturers show off their new creations.

Featured at this year’s happening will be the Mercedes AMG-One supercar, the Ferrari Daytona SP3, Prodrive’s P25 Subaru Impreza tribute model, the Radford Lotus Type 62/2, the BMW M4 CSL, Lotus Emira and many more.

There’s plenty to see and do at Goodwood

Those attending don’t just get to watch the action – some of the most thrilling driving experiences available to purchase are on offer across the weekend too.

Off-road and trial bike experiences can be sampled, along with the Jaguar Drift Experience, a test drive of the new all-electric Polestar2 and, for the bravest out there, the Land Rover Off-Road Arena obstacle course.

A wide range of dining options are available, from restaurants and bars to quick bites, while there is also a wide range of vendors selling the highest quality motor sport wares, from fine art and photography to clothing and merchandise.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is held from June 23 – June 26, with a packed schedule of action across all four days.

There are now only tickets available for the Thursday, with the rest of the weekend sold out.

There’s still lots to be seen on the opening day though, with many exclusive and exotic road cars making their world debuts on the Hillclimb, as well as iconic rally machines running past, the Goodwood Actions Sports how (featuring various stunt displays) and a Red Arrows Flyover.
