Because apparently working out isn’t scary enough for Gen Z.

It’s no secret that the world has been a little, well, apocalyptic of late.

Between fires, floods and plagues, the biblical level of social impact these events have had on our younger generations cannot be understated.

And, as in most situations, this ends up being expressed through art and culture (in its many forms, including fashion, film and the digital world).

While Millennials may remember our 'dark youth days' binge watching Skins and scrolling through moody images on Tumblr, the new generation has to suffice with Euphoria and TikTok.

This pre-occupation with the dark and moody also extends to dystopian literature.

Que, ‘dystopiacore’, a fashion trend consisting of Matrix-energy trench coats, combat boots and cargo pants, kind of like what you would wear if all of a sudden the thin structures that hold our society together were to crumble and we all had to fend for ourselves.

Then, of course, there’s the activewear version. Think Tris from the Divergent series or Katniss from The Hunger Games.

Creators have even taken to their TikTok pages to share their all-black outfits, on the treadmill like a member of the Dauntless running from some unknown threat.

So – could ‘dystopiacore workouts’ be the next big thing to get us moving (and moving fast)?

One Divergent fan who saw the aesthetic trending online has even created a Dauntless-inspired workout plan for those who want to exercise like their lives depend on it.

“As someone on a fitness journey for the past seven months and a fangirl since I was 13, I’ve always wanted to workout with the Dauntless. So I present to you my Dauntless training manual,” she said in a TikTok.

Guess it’s time to get our all-black-everything activewear on and hit that treadmill.

What will Gen Z make us do next?!?
